Board Is a Spec, Not a Vibe
"Sturdy box" is not a purchase order line. Corrugated board has measurable attributes. You do not need to become a mill engineer, but you do need to stop upgrading to double-wall by panic alone.

Anatomy in One Minute
Corrugated = linerboard + fluted medium + linerboard (more layers for double/triple wall). Flute profile changes crush resistance, printability, and caliper (thickness).
Common flute personalities

ECT vs Burst (Mullen)
- ECT (Edge Crush Test): Predicts stacking strength — how the carton behaves under compression. Dominant spec in many modern shipper catalogs.
- Burst / Mullen: Older puncture/burst focus — still appears on some board grades and export conversations.
If your failure mode is warehouse stacking, obsess over ECT and alignment of flutes. If your failure mode is rough single-parcel abuse, caliper, corners, and internal fit may matter more than chasing a buzzword grade.
Single Wall vs Double Wall
Double wall is not automatically "better." It adds weight, cube, and cost. Use it when product weight, stacking height, or international handling justifies it. Many DTC softgoods brands overbuy double wall and underbuy fit.
Moisture and Reality
Corrugate hates humidity. A perfect ECT rating in a dry lab softens in a coastal warehouse in August. Account for climate when you test packs. Waxed or coated boards exist for produce and cold chain — see Cold Chain.
Print and Branding Trade-offs
High-quality outer print often wants finer flutes or litho labels. Do not let the brand team specify a billboard that fails ECT in the trailer. Solution patterns: printed mailer + plain shipper, or label on kraft.
Spec Template for Suppliers
When you send an RFQ, include:
- Internal dimensions (and whether size is ID or OD)
- Board grade (e.g., 32 ECT C-flute) preferred + acceptable alternates
- Print (flexo 1–2 colour vs none)
- Bundle count, pallet config, monthly/quarterly volume
- Recycled content targets if you track metrics/EPR
Failure Autopsy Habit
Photograph every damage claim: corner crush, face bulge, seam split, moisture wipeout. Tag by lane. Patterns tell you whether you have a board problem, a void-fill problem, or a last-mile handling problem.
Spec Language for Buyers
When you RFQ, say more than “a sturdy box”:
- Board grade / flute (e.g. 32 ECT B-flute or 200# C-flute — know which system your mill uses)
- Inside dimensions (not outside) and grain direction if printing matters
- Print: flexo 1–2 colour vs litho label
- Bundle counts and pallet config
- Target ECT or Burst — and whether you need edge crush for stacking
